On December 18, 2008 at a fan convention in Japan, Peter Jackson announced that a sequel would be in development. On September 17, 2009, Peter Jackson announced that the game would be released in Spring 2010. The date was later set to September 30, 2010.
LotR: Battle for Middle-Earth is a free-to-play MMORPG based on the LotR universe. Like Middle-Earth: Shadows of Mordor and The Lord of the Rings Online, the game uses the EverQuest II engine, and is the second MMORPG game to be based on the LotR universe. Players level up by collecting loot and defeating monsters. New abilities are acquired, and old ones are upgraded, by equipping gear that has been assigned to you. Players use special abilities, like Mounts, to traverse the world. All of this is done in the context of a massively multiplayer online game.
On September 30, 2010, the game was released for download on PC, Xbox Live and PlayStation Network worldwide.
